What Is the Skin Barrier, Really?

It’s the wall of skin cells and natural fats that keeps water in and the world out — and almost everything “dry, tight, or irritated” traces back to it. Here’s how it actually works, in plain English.

08 How fats support the barrier

Here’s where the bricks-and-mortar picture pays off. If the mortar is fat, and everyday life keeps stripping it, then the supporting role of skincare gets very concrete: put compatible fats where the missing fats were, and slow the water loss while skin restocks its own.

Skincare fats work three ways, and the vocabulary is worth two sentences because it makes every label readable:
