It’s the wall of skin cells and natural fats that keeps water in and the world out — and almost everything “dry, tight, or irritated” traces back to it. Here’s how it actually works, in plain English.

Nearly every ordinary skin complaint that isn’t a medical condition — tightness after washing, winter flaking, stinging products, skin that suddenly “hates everything” — is this wall asking for maintenance. Which is good news, because the maintenance is neither complicated nor expensive. Understanding the wall is most of the battle, so let’s look at the bricks and the mortar.
